Shafa is an Urdu word, which means ‘power of healing’. Based on the oldest and most effective model of healing, Shafa Home acts as a harbinger of hope, self-realization and true happiness for hundreds of recovering alcohol/drug dependents. Shafa, a non-profit organization, goes one step ahead of the traditional methods to treat addiction and behavioral disorders by using well-researched methods of healing. Volunteers who have already undergone successful treatment at Shafa and have their own personal experience into recovery make the team of our devoted staff. They are skilled in the complexities of the disease and are passionate about helping people like them recover from addiction.

Treatment at Shafa is based on a holistic module that emphasizes on the Physical, Psychological, Social and Spiritual recovery of the residents. We view addiction as a disease, characterized by a dependence on substance and behaviors. Though the disease is chronic and progressive, it’s definitely treatable. WE DO NOT PERMIT THE USE OF ANY MOOD-ALTERING SUBSTANCE in any of our facilities as we believe in 100 % abstinence from day one. We feel that recovery is not a destination; it’s a journey that requires a firm commitment to abstinence from alcohol/drugs and compulsive behaviours. Above all, Shafa Home is a home away from home that assists its residents in regaining their self-esteem and self-worth.

HISTORY

...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

On November 22nd, 1999, a dedicated group of recovering addicts approached Mr. Ranjan Dhar (keeping in mind his 8 years of experience and expertise) with a common goal in mind. The goal was to set up the first Therapeutic Community of India for offering de-addiction treatment and psychiatric services in a model never used before. Other treatments that were available at that time treated the disease only on the physical level and tackled only withdrawal management. These treatments believed in treating the addict with medicines which often led to substitution of the drug of choice. This group on the other hand, wanted to set up a centre where NO mood altering substances were provided as a substitute.

This group also wanted to dispel the myth that existed in society,” once an addict always an addict”. They themselves had set an example to the world that addiction is curable. Based on this, they cultivated more humane ways in the culture of their treatment and based it on the individual’s feeling and thinking pattern. They believed that it was not alone the drug that needed handling but rather the behavior of the addict that had to be modified.

How It Is Different From Others

At the end of the day, counselors across the world spend most of their time crafting lesson plans, laminating papers and reading stories. However, they overlook the fact that it’s not about teaching, it’s all about ‘touching’ – and unless that human touch is not inculcated in a rehabilitation program, teaching alone will not help. At Shafa, it’s the relationships that we build with our residents, it’s the time that we invest in them, and it’s those little ways we stop and show concern in. All in all, it’s the love we share with them: of learning, of life, and most importantly, of people. The last 15 years have made us coin ‘the power of human TOUCH’ into our treatment module, which means:

TRANSPARENT MODEL: Operating out of our spacious facility, we trust that not only will your loved one feel safe and secure at Shafa, but you too will feel well-guided by a transparent model offering a complete insight into his treatment. ‘OPTIMISTIC’ outlook: Our compassionate team works with residents beyond their addictions. We rebuild their capacity to manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviors with a positive outlook, while moving through situations that may have adversely affected them in the past.

CONCERN for COMMUNITY: Shafa actively works towards social development and encompasses various community-based programs for the purpose of educating, not just the residents’ families but also the general masses. Such outreach programs aim at generating awareness in the society about the harmful effects of addiction.

HOLISTIC approach: We engage different treatment modalities to provide the necessary life skills one needs during recovery. Rest assured, it is going to be the best time for your loved one to take care of his unique self at Shafa.

Making S.U.R.E.

...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

At Shafa, we distinguish ourselves from other rehabilitation centers with the help of an ongoing support and follow-up program. This program, known as Shafa’s Unique Recovery Evaluation, is designed to contact former residents of Shafa at regular intervals to make sure that they are integrating well into their next phase of recovery, post treatment at Shafa. By doing this, our motive is to remain available to them as a support system in their recovery process even after their discharge. Further, this information obtained through home visits and phone calls assists us in obtaining our recovery statistics as well as obtaining feedback to sustain distinction in our services. At Shafa, we believe in making sure that our collective efforts do not go in vain.
