Why Shafa
And what makes us the best rehab in India
Recovery is not defined by the time spent in treatment—it's defined by the life lived after it. At SHAFA, thousands of individuals and families have experienced lasting transformation, making our alumni the strongest testament to the effectiveness of our program.
Becoming one of India's largest and most trusted de-addiction and rehabilitation center has been the result of years of unwavering commitment, evidence-based therapeutic practices, and a culture that inspires genuine personal change. Our Therapeutic Community (TC) model goes beyond treating addiction—it rebuilds character, restores relationships, and helps individuals rediscover purpose.
Our success is reflected not only in the number of lives we've touched but in the lives that continue to thrive after treatment. In a recent follow-up conducted through home visits and telephonic surveys, over 86% of individuals who completed their treatment at SHAFA remained in recovery, a remarkable outcome compared to the estimated national average of 20–30%.
At SHAFA, recovery is more than sobriety—it's a lifelong transformation built on discipline, accountability, compassion, and community. That's what makes us different, and that's what makes us one of the most trusted rehabilitation centres in India.
THE STORY OF INCEPTION OF SHAFA
A Vision That Changed Addiction Treatment
SHAFA was founded on 22nd November 1999 with a singular vision—to transform the way addiction treatment was delivered in India. Guided by the leadership and expertise of
Mr. Ranjan Dhar, and supported by a dedicated group of recovering individuals, SHAFA was established to help people overcome drug and alcohol addiction through complete physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual healing.
At a time when most de-addiction programs focused primarily on detoxification and managing withdrawal symptoms, SHAFA introduced a revolutionary approach. As one of India's first Therapeutic Community (TC) rehabilitation centres, it shifted the focus from simply treating symptoms to addressing the underlying causes of addiction. Rather than relying on substitute mood-altering substances, the program emphasised personal responsibility, behavioural change, peer support, and long-term recovery.
This pioneering "bio-psycho-social-spiritual" model redefined addiction treatment in the country and laid the foundation for a recovery movement that has transformed thousands of lives. Over the years, SHAFA has grown into one of India's most respected rehabilitation centres, while remaining true to the values on which it was founded—compassion, integrity, accountability, and the unwavering belief that every individual deserves a second chance.
Today, the story of SHAFA is not just about its beginning—it is about the countless lives rebuilt, families reunited, and futures restored through the power of recovery.
Mission
Shafa is an Urdu word that means "the power of healing." Built upon one of the oldest and most effective models of recovery, Shafa Home is a non-profit organization that serves as a beacon of hope, self-discovery, and lasting happiness for hundreds of individuals recovering from alcohol and drug dependence.
Guided by our mission, "Healing the Feeling, Feeling the Healing," we go beyond traditional approaches to treating addiction and behavioral disorders by incorporating well-researched, evidence-based healing methods that address the mind, body, and spirit.
Our dedicated team is made up of volunteers who have successfully completed treatment at Shafa and have firsthand experience in recovery. Their personal journeys, combined with specialized training, enable them to understand the complexities of addiction with empathy and insight. Passionate about helping others reclaim their lives, they are committed to guiding individuals and families toward lasting recovery and renewed hope.
