How to Set up a Daily Recovery Practice after Treatment
For many people, breaking free of addiction begins with an inpatient treatment programme, but there’s a strong day-to-day aspect involved with staying clean and sober. In this post, we explore what goes into setting up a successful daily recovery practice.
Staying clean and sober is a lifelong endeavour that requires a commitment to daily work.
Here’s how to set up a daily recovery practice after addiction treatment.
Recovery from addiction is an ongoing process, and it requires a daily commitment to staying clean and sober. But after completing a comprehensive inpatient addiction-treatment programme – like the one operated by SHAFA HOME, – you may find that the hardest work is yet to come. This is what makes it so important to set up a daily recovery practice to keep your recovery strong.
Make Ongoing Treatment Part of Your Daily Recovery Practice
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a cornerstone of The Cabin’s addiction treatment programme. During inpatient rehabilitation, our clients meet an addiction treatment specialist who will help them identify and address any problematic thoughts that are reinforcing their addiction. This intensive CBT helps clients make connections between their thoughts, feelings and actions – all of which helps to found a stronger recovery.
After this initial treatment period, the person can feel extraordinarily strong in their recovery. They’ve finally begun to grasp how their own behaviours and ingrained thought patterns complicate their struggle with addiction. The problem is that this strong sense of resolve will naturally fade over time.
This is where ongoing treatment comes into play. We strongly recommend all of our clients to seek ongoing intensive outpatient (IOP) therapy after they leave The Cabin and return to ‘normal life’. Regular one-on-one meetings with a specialist can help you maintain this initial momentum over the long term. It also means that you’ll have someone to speak and strategize with as new challenges present themselves in your life.
Make Peer Support Part of Your Daily Recovery Practice
Another extremely important aspect of inpatient addiction treatment at SHAFA HOME is the ongoing support of other people who are also building a life in recovery. These are people who, like you, have recognised and acknowledged the harm that their addiction is inflicting on themselves and on the lives of those they care about. The support you can receive from this peer group is incredibly important, which is why we organise group therapy sessions in addition to your one-on-one CBT therapy with an addiction treatment specialist.
The community aspect of group therapy is vital to an addict’s recovery, and this is something that needs to continue once you return home. With that in mind, we actively encourage all of our clients to seek out recovery fellowships back at home. The most common example of this is a 12-Step fellowship, and these are relatively easy to find anywhere in the world. In the course of finding a recovery fellowship, we also highly recommend finding a sponsor – someone who has successfully maintained long-term recovery and can help you to do the same.
In addition to this, you may also find becoming a part of non-recovery-related groups also helps to strengthen and maintain your reserve. Examples include community programmes and service groups. Upon completing treatment at SHAFA HOME, we’ll leverage our network to help you connect with recovery fellowships and other groups back home.
Remember That Healthy Living Underpins a Strong Recovery Practice
It’s impossible to overemphasise just how important it is to keep your body healthy and up to the challenge of staying clean and sober. Given the fact that addiction is a chronic physical disease rooted in the brain, it becomes apparent just how important it is to stay in good physical shape. Doing so ensures that your body and brain are up to the challenge of staying healthy and fending off relapse and addictive behaviour.
Here are a few areas of holistic living that we encourage clients to incorporate into their daily recovery practice:
A healthy and nutritious diet
Regular exercise
Plenty of sleep
A commitment to good hygiene
Daily mindfulness meditation
Yoga practice
The combination of the above will keep your mind and body fit and ready to maintain a long and healthy recovery.
